Notes

Sokari Douglas Camp est née en 1958 au Nigeria. Elle arrive en Angleterre dans les années 70 et y suit des études d'art à la Central School of Art and Design (1983) puis au Royal College of Art (1986). Au cours de ses études elle se prend d'intérêt pour la sculpture avec une obsession en tête, le mouvement. Cherchant encore sa voie, elle photographie le mouvement de l'eau puis compose, presque par accident, une première œuvre qui s'apparente à une mascarade. Sa voie se précise, elle suit alors son inspiration qui la guide vers sa culture kalabari, l'esthétique des mascarades et les mouvements des danseurs.
Sa première sculpture métallique, elle la réalise à la mort de son père. Alors qu'elle porte encore le deuil, elle décide de créer une œuvre en son hommage. Elle revit la veillée mortuaire aucours de laquelle on place le défunt de lit en lit. Lui vient alors l'idée d'un lit en baldaquin fait d'acier, accompagné de deux pleureuses. Church Ede (1984), œuvre tant honorifique que consolatrice, fait aujourd'hui partie de la collection Smithsonian.
Installée à Londres, Douglas Camp est l'unique artiste ayant bénéficié d'un programme de résidence à l'Africa Centre en 1987. Expérience dont elle garde encore un vif souvenir. Après s'être illustrée avec ses sculptures cinétiques dans les années 80, elle a eu l'envie de recréer l'environnement dont elle tire son inspiration. Au terme d'un travail de six mois est né Sekiapu, combinant ses nouvelles œuvres et une mascarade presentée par dix-sept danseurs venus spécialement de Buguma, sa ville natale.
De cette résidence mémorable, ne restent plus que les sculptures, vides, comme pour signifier l'absence du danseur. Mais demeure le mouvement, saisi au point culminant de la danse et ancré dans des formes métalliques. Formes qu'elle dessine en maniant le chalumeau comme certains le pinceau. Parlant tant en technicienne qu'en artiste, elle apporte aussi un grand intérêt à la fabrication des textiles dont elle crée les motifs.
Certains ne voient en son œuvre que l'aspect decoratif, ou au mieux, l'appropriation moderniste de masques traditionnels. Sokari ne cache pas sa fascination pour les masques au design, comme elle le dit, surréaliste. Elle se souvient des histoires fantastiques qu'elle entendait étant enfant. Et, c'est avec une note d'humour qu'elle crée des sculptures animées d'un moteur qui tourne de manière impromptue (Freud-White Sacrifice, 1998). Mais son art n'a rien d'artificiel. Si l'Afrique est fortement présente dans son travail, c'est parce qu'elle fait indubitablement partie d'elle-même. Pour autant, ce brin de femme, capable de réaliser des œuvres monumentales (Man on Man, 2002) est en parfait accord avec son temps. Abolissant le rapport entre genres et techniques, elle est aussi de celles - et ceux - qui incarnent une Afrique ayant droit de cité dans l'arène contemporaine.
